30 military houses are being tested by Cannon Air Force Base after the malignant substance asbestos was discovered in two vacant military homes.

According to Capt. Rebecca Garcia, a spokeswoman for the base near Clovis, asbestos hasn't been found in dangerous levels in Cannon housing. She said that the risk for people living and working in military housing appeared low.

"However, until tests are complete, residents should avoid doing anything that could disturb asbestos, such as drilling into ceilings or walls," she said.

She said that test results are expected to be released in June.

Many of the housing on base were built in the late 1950s and late 1960s and renovated in the 1990s.

Garcia said that though the tests in the mid-1990s had showed the presence of asbestos in building materials, it was not in dangerous amounts.

"Encased asbestos, once commonly used for insulation and fireproofing, is contained in some drywall, floor tile, roof shingles and ceiling textures in Cannon housing. That type of asbestos isn't dangerous unless damaged or disturbed," Garcia said. "The two unoccupied homes were tested for asbestos after water damaged their ceilings."

When asbestos containing materials are destructed or disturbed, Asbestos becomes airborne, and can be inhaled into the lungs which may cause severe health problems and deadly diseases like  asbestosis and mesothelioma.
